Understanding GST & VAT

Adding Tax

Start with the base (pre-tax) price and add the tax on top — used when quoting prices before tax is applied.

Removing Tax

Start with a tax-inclusive price (like an MRP or receipt total) and extract the base price and tax portion.

CGST + SGST vs IGST

In India, intra-state sales split GST equally into CGST and SGST; inter-state sales charge the full rate as IGST instead.

Bulk Invoices

Add multiple line items with different amounts and rates to get an instant invoice-level subtotal, tax, and grand total.

How to Use the GST & VAT

Pick a Direction

Choose "Add Tax" if you have a pre-tax price, or "Remove Tax" if your amount already includes tax.

Enter Amount & Rate

Type the amount and pick a common rate chip, or enter any custom percentage. Results update instantly.

Check the Split

Switch to CGST/SGST Split for the India-specific breakup between intra-state and inter-state transactions.

Use Bulk Invoice Mode

Add several line items with their own amounts and rates to get a full invoice subtotal, tax, and total — exportable as CSV.

Frequently Asked
Questions

1. How do I calculate GST from a total amount?

Switch to “Remove Tax” mode, enter the total (tax-inclusive) amount, and set the rate. The base amount is calculated as Total ÷ (1 + rate/100), and the tax amount is the difference between the total and the base.

For intra-state sales in India, GST is split equally into CGST (collected by the central government) and SGST (collected by the state government) — for example, 18% GST becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For inter-state sales, the full rate is charged as a single IGST instead of being split.

Yes. The Single Calculator and Bulk Invoice modes work with any percentage-based tax — GST, VAT, or sales tax — in any currency. The CGST/SGST/IGST split is specific to India’s GST structure and can simply be skipped by users elsewhere.

They don’t — they’re two directions of the same calculation. If you add 18% tax to a base of 1,000, you get a total of 1,180. If you then remove 18% tax from that same total of 1,180, you correctly get back a base of 1,000. Entering the total in “Add Tax” mode by mistake will give you an incorrect, inflated result.

Yes — switch to Bulk Invoice mode, add a row per line item, and set a different amount and rate for each. The tool totals the subtotal, tax, and grand total across all rows automatically, and you can export the full invoice as a CSV file.
